In spite of no calories, beetroots have a considerable amount of vitamins — A, C, B6 and folate, which are needed by your body to stay strong and healthy.

Beetroots have been ranked as one of the top 10 most potent antioxidant vegetables. The betalain compounds, responsible for the root’s red color, have been shown to have high anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities which is claimed to protect cells from damage and may be helpful in the fight against age-related conditions like heart disease and cancer. Nitrates in beets are thought to improve blood flow leading to better brain function and lower blood pressure. Indeed, beet juice is a quick and easy way to make the most of its nutritional benefits in your diet to keep you healthy and strong.

Together with the big antioxidant boost called betalain, which contribute to the general free-radical scavenging and these antioxidants are claimed to have health benefits including a reduced risk of cancers.

Lower blood pressure

Being naturally rich in compounds called nitrates, this helps to improve blood flow by widening and relaxing the blood vessels and reducing arterial stiffness which potentially reduces blood pressure.  Studies also suggested that nitrate-rich foods such as beetroots, may also help in heart attack survival. Drinking a cup of beet juice on a daily basis could significantly lower the blood pressure of people with high blood pressure.

Increases stamina/supports energy levels

Beet juice has also gained popularity since Paralympic gold medallist, David Weir, announced that a shot of beetroot juice was his secret to success.  Further findings also supported that by drinking this juice, it helps in exercise endurance and improve performance.  Nitrates in beetroot helps to bring more oxygen to the resting muscle cells therefore, helping muscles to recover more efficiently. In fact beetroot helps your heart and lungs to work better during exercise. Further to this, a study also reported that drinking a glass of beetroot juice improved muscle power in patient with heart failure. Beets are rich in folate which helps cells grow and function accordingly to control damage to the blood vessels, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Improves Eye health

Beetroot contains leutin and zeaxanthin, a kind of antioxidants that protects eye and help to delay the degenerative changes in the eye including cataracts. They also contain a wide variety of phytochemicals that may help improve the health of your eyes and nerve tissues and also sharpens your vision and protects you from getting infections and allergies. Beet juice may be used as a temporary red tint to your hair instead of the normal chemical hair dye which can lead to damage, breakage, and dryness to your strands. For those who feel awkward about the greys can now cover the strands naturally. So, get ready to give your hair a subtle and vivid boost.

Method: You can make this beet juice hair-dye by juicing some beets, and then mixing the juice with a carrier oil like coconut or olive oil. Apply this mixture to your hair with generous amount and massage gently, making sure your whole head is properly coated with the mixture.  Then wrap your hair in a plastic head wrap to let it sit for at least an hour. After rinsing, you may find that your hair has a new cool-red tint that may last for a few weeks.

Additional research suggests that a beet juice allows activities such as brisk walking less exhausting especially for seniors.

For some people, eating beetroot may induce beeturia; a red or pink color in the urine or stool. Do not worry as it is totally harmless!
