Glycerin is an ingredient that can be found in many beauty products because of its moisture locking properties which act as an emollient. Glycerin is colorless, odorless and is slightly sweet which is also used in food and pharmaceuticals to act as a solvent, humectant, sweetener, viscosity adjuster and thickener.

As a humectant, or hygroscopic in nature, glycerin attracts moisture from the epidermis and the environment to the surface layers of the skin. Apart from moisturizing, it also has cleansing, lubricating and soothing properties. Products which contain glycerin on a daily usage are such as cough syrups, expectorants, toothpaste, mouthwash, soaps, skincare and hair care products.
