The world is facing a medical crisis amid the Covid-19 pandemic with its daily statistic still soaring high, thus causing alarm and distress among us all. Therefore the role of prevention from this fatal virus still boils down to personal hygiene which is inevitable in controlling the spread of this infection in public places, hospitals, work places or even at home.
By now, we are all aware of the basic precautions we have to take in order to curb this deadly coronavirus from spreading. The most important being :
Take your shower immediately once you are back from public places including your office
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds each time
Avoid blowing your nose, coughing and sneezing in public places
In the case of soap and water not readily available, use a sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
Lastly, avoid touching your eyes, mouth, nose and face with your hands.
HOW EFFECTIVE ARE SANITIZERS?
Alcohol based hand-rub (ABHR) is highly recommended with 60-95% alcohol in healthcare settings. The alcohol content in the sanitizer helps reduce the number of microbes on hands in most situations. It can also help kill a wide range of disease-causing agents on your hands including the current coronavirus. Hand rubs are generally less irritating to hands and are effective in the absence of a sink.
It is important to use hand sanitizer properly to ensure it does the job well – to disinfect and get rid of germs. Make sure your hands are not dirty when using the sanitizer. Use sufficient amount thoroughly to coat every part of your hands including your fingers. Rub both hands well until they are dry.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAND SANITIZER?
Hand sanitizers are strongly recommended by doctors and healthcare professionals. They are convenient and easy-to-use solutions that help in preventing the spread of germs when soap and warm water are not available. This makes hand-washing effective and easy and should be a practical skill that you can learn and practice every day. Alcohol-based sanitizers can reduce about 97% of the bacteria on your hands. Not only will you reduce your risk of infection, but you’ll also reduce the risk of spreading the germs to others.
Whenever you are travelling, keeping a bottle of hand sanitizer in your bag is a wise decision. Hand sanitizer is the perfect solution to keep good hand hygiene on-the-go when water and soap are not available during emergency. By regular use of hand sanitizer, it will definitely reduce your chances of being getting sick and infected and at the same will also reduce the spread of viruses, germs and bacteria.
DIY HAND SANITIZERS – AN ALTERNATIVE
However, the spread of this coronavirus globally has led to people taking extreme measures such as stocking up on hygiene, sanitizing and medical products. These measures have not only led to a shortage of products but also an increase in prices. On the earlier onset of this disease, we did experienced shortages of face masks and hand sanitizers which rather put us in a vulnerable situation. As a matter of fact, we need to understand that soap and water are not readily available during times of travel or in other dire situation, therefore, we then need to think of alternatives.

As a result…..
The best and most consistent way of preventing the spread of the coronavirus, and reducing the risk of contacting it is of course remains washing your hands with soap and water as your first choice, but alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol are a practical alternative when soap and water aren’t available.
Always ensure that your hand sanitizer is within reach so that there is no excuse of not using it during this pandemic period. Do have a few bottles placed at strategic locations at home but surely not easily accessible by small children. Always monitor use of the hand sanitizer by children.
Another important location to keep hand sanitizer is in the office. The question of where should be the best place to ‘showcase’ the hand sanitizer in the work place. The answer is simple – everyone should keep a bottle !
