This is normally due to rapid expansion or contraction of the skin.  As the body grows slowly, the connecting fibers in the dermis will also slowly stretch to accommodate growth rate. However, rapid growth or expansion leads to sudden stretching. This causes the dermis to tear, allowing deeper layers of skin to show through. Therefore, this can form stretch marks and contributes to the way they look.  However, as time passes, they will eventually fade to a silvery, white, or glossy appearance, due to the pale fat beneath the skin becoming visible instead of the usual blood vessels.

Pregnancy is the most common cause of stretch marks and it occurs towards the end of the second trimester and onwards. Your body expands as your baby grows and rapid weight gain makes you more prone to this stretch marks. But that might not be the only reason for it. Changes in your hormones during pregnancy can affect your skin and make it more likely to “tear.”
