Everyone knows that rice is the main food staple in Asian cuisine, therefore, it is affordable and easily accessible.  Aside from this, rice is also a fundamental part of Asian beauty and skin care practices.  Japanese and Korean women have been using rice water as skincare and hair care products for centuries and they swear by the benefits for giving them glowing and healthy skin.  Rice contains ‘pitera’ which is a natural byproduct of the fermentation process which is one of the main benefits lauded by the SK-II treatment line. Pitera is beneficial for revitalizing skin’s natural glow and gives you clear and fair skin.

What is rice water? It refers to the milky water, left after soaking or cooking the rice. It is rich in starch content and has either a thin or thick consistency. If you take some time to browse through the ingredients list of any K-beauty product, you will certainly find rice water in it and more brands have also come up with some rice water skin care products.

Sometimes the best solution could be the simplest one, and that definitely applies to rice water.  For the skin, rice water is said to be an inexpensive, effective beauty ingredient for cleansing, toning, lightening and brightening. Rice water illuminates and tightens skin, assisting with smoother texture, minus all the spots and pigmentation, thus leaving skin a porcelain finish.  By regular use of rice water, pigmentation or brown spots are said to diminish, and this rice water works as well as an effective skin lightening serum or cream.

Rice water has many properties that make it an excellent addition to your skin and hair care regimens! It is loaded with vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are essential for maintaining healthy and glowing skin. Rice water contains the nourishing antioxidant ferulic acid, as well as allantoin, an organic compound that helps soothe and heal skin. It also contains kojic acid which has skin brightening abilities, anti-fungal properties and antibacterial functions.

Facial Toner

Rice water makes a great toner! This magic water can be used as a facial cleanser or toner to cleanse face, minimize pores and tighten skin, giving you a younger and radiant look. Just spritz or pour some onto a cotton pad and apply to clean skin. It helps tighten skin and minimize pores, keeping your skin refreshed, smooth and brightening.

Protects Skin Barrier

The outermost layer of skin is known as a skin barrier that prevents your skin from becoming dry and vulnerable to conditions like eczema and atopic dermatitis. However, studies have found that starch in rice can improve and soothe impaired skin barriers such as atopic dermatitis and acne while keeping your skin layers hydrated.

Soothe Irritated Skin such as acne, sunburn or eczema

The soothing effect from the starchy content of rice water helps to reduce redness, inflammation and itching while acting as an astringent for acne and eczema. In fact, a 2002 study found that patients with atopic dermatitis who bathed in rice water twice a day experienced much improvement.  So if you have itchy or irritated skin, try this by just adding 1-2 cups of rice water to your bath, then take a nice long soak.

Age Spot Treatment or Skin Brightening Effect

The Koreans and Japanese are using rice water to brighten their skin. It is assumed that rice water must have some enzymes or whitening compounds that have skin brightening effect. Use rice water to make a simple and effective treatment for age spots, skin discoloration and hyper-pigmentation such as scars and sun spots.  Mix 1 tablespoon of rice water with a few drops of jojoba or rosehip oil and massage  it into your face and neck. Using these 2 carrier oils will not only target your dark spots but will also promote anti aging benefits.

Anti-Aging Benefits

‘Fermented’ rice water boasts numerous benefits for the skin. It has become an authentic anti-aging elixiris loaded with minerals, antioxidants, B and E vitamins, and traces of pitera. These minerals and antioxidants help to purify, tighten and smoothen the skin,  minimizing fine lines, wrinkles and pores, therefore help to maintain the elasticity of the skin and reduce the signs of aging.

Hair Rinse

Due to the presence of inositol, a form of carbohydrate, rice water has the ability to strengthen, maintain elasticity and promote shining hair. If you want shining and healthy hair, use this to replace the normal water after shampooing and conditioning your hair. Gently massage it into your scalp and hair, then the final rinse is to use the normal water.

There are a couple of simple ways to make rice water for skin whitening and anti-aging and all these can be done in the comfort of your own home.

Boiling rice water

Boil the rice just the way you cook it but use about 3-4 times more water than rice. Stir the rice and water together and bring to a boil. Remove it from the heat and press the rice with a ladle to release the helpful chemicals.  Then strain out the starchy water and let it cool down completely before refrigeration.  This can be stored for up to a week. Dilute with plain water before using.

Soaking rice water

You can also make rice water by soaking rice in water. Rinse the rice first but instead of boiling the rice and water, let it soak for at least 30 minutes.  Gentle stir the rice with your fingers before pressing the rice and straining it through the sieve. Finally, refrigerate the rice water. You can also store this rice water in the refrigerator for a week.

Fermented rice water

To make fermented rice water, follow the same process for soaking the rice. After pressing and straining out the rice, instead of sending it to the refrigerator, leave it in a container at room temperature for two to three days. When the container starts to have a sour smell, you may then put it in the refrigerator. Dilute with plain water before using.  After a few days, you may notice some sediment at the bottom of the container. You may transfer the clear liquid in another glass bottle for a clearer liquid if you want.

Now how to use these ?

Soaked or boiled rice water which is stored in a spray bottle can be directly used on your skin. Whenever you have cleansed your face, you may spritz it on as a toner or mist. Keep it on for 30 minutes and wash it off with warm water. Alternatively you can use a cotton pad to apply on your face whenever needed.

If you are using fermented rice water, take 2-3 tablespoons of fermented rice water from the container in a bowl. Store the rest in the refrigerator again. Dilute it in a small cups of water (about 200 ml).  Mix it well and store it in a spray bottle. Spritz it on or use a cotton ball to apply it whenever you want. Study found that fermented rice water is extremely good for the skin. It is more potent and has significant anti-aging benefits as it promotes pro-collagen synthesis. Fermented rice wine also prevents UV damage and protect the natural barrier of the skin. For DIY recipe, you can also use this water as a base for face packs or masks.

Now, how frequent can we use rice to get fair skin?  Rice water is safe to use everyday. It can be used twice a day on your face as a toner and twice a week as a facial mask.  You can even  leave it on your face overnight and wash it off the next morning. You can also add some Aloe Vera gel to the overnight treatment for extra moisturization. But make sure you do the smell test of the stored rice water before using and if the batch smells sour, discard it and prepare a new one.

Most of the citrus derived essential oils do promote skin whitening in a certain extent, however, we need to take precautions of the potential side effects.  These essential oils might make your skin more sensitive to irritation from the sun so it is best to avoid direct sunlight when using any citrus essential oil.

LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL is considered to be the best oil for skin whitening, as it contains two main natural bleachers: limonene and citric acid. The first agent helps to lighten the skin tone, and citric acid improves skin peeling and removes the presence of new debris and blackheads.  It has other wonderful properties such as antioxidants, collagen boosting, antimicrobial and toning.   As a natural and gentle brightener, you can safely use it to tighten pores, lighten scars and smoothen skin tone by simply combining few drops of lemon oil with 20ml of almond oil in a glass bottle with a dropper. Gently shake to allow the oils to mix well. Use 4-5 drops of this serum on damp, clean skin every day.

TEA TREE ESSENTIAL OIL is a perfect solution for general skin lightening and for treating acne scars and skin imperfections. It also helps in opening pores, removing dirt and oil that cause whiteheads, blackheads, and breakouts.  Though it might not be known to many, tea tree oil is probably the most effective home remedy for acne scars. You may try spot treatment by adding 2-3 drops of this oil into a spoonful of carrier  oil and then mix it well. Use a Q-tip to apply the mixture directly onto the scars. Apply before bedtime and let it sit until morning before washing it off.  Or you may even try your own DIY mask by adding 2-3 drops of this to some yogurt or honey.  Mix it well and then apply on your scars.
